Georgia’s 9th District Congressional Race Wide Open

August 24, 2009
With more than 10 months to go until voters select a Republican to run for Georgia’s 9th District Congressional seat being vacated by Nathan Deal, there is no clear winner in a poll conducted by Majority Opinion Research. Currently, none of the announced candidates for this Republican primary have more than 50% name recognition among likely Republican primary voters and six out of ten voters do not know who they would vote for if the election were held today.

Name Recognition:

Mike Evans: 50%
Lee Hawkins: 41%
Bill Stephens: 41%
Tom Graves: 34%
Jeremy Jones: 27%

If Election Held Today:

Lee Hawkins: 12%
Mike Evans: 10%
Tom Graves: 9%
Bill Stephens: 5%
Jeremy Jones: 3%
Undecided: 61%

Factoring undecided voters out of the equation for analysis, Lee Hawkins would face Mike Evans or Tom Graves in a runoff, if the election were indeed held today.

The poll was conducted August 23, 2009 with 595 registered Republican primary voters in Georgia’s 9th Congressional District. The poll is weighted by age, race, gender and region within the district. The poll has a maximum sampling error of +/- 3.9%.
