A survey conducted by InsiderAdvantage and Majority Opinion Research for American Solutions, the non-partisan organization chaired by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, finds that an unusually high percentage of Americans are aware of a proposal by the administration to “mandate that companies that supply the electricity, oil, and gas to homes and businesses must pay for carbon emissions permits.”
In the poll of 602 voters conducted April 2, 2009, 56% of respondents were aware of the proposal already. And of those surveyed, over 54% already said they would consider the proposal a tax if the costs of such permits were passed on to the consumer. The current proposal set forth by the administration provides for assistance to low income consumers in anticipation that other consumers will see increased energy costs as a result of the proposal. |
