Republicans and Democrats at Odds Over Increasing Budget Ceiling

A Majority Opinion Research national poll of voters finds that 46% of American voters do not think that Congress should vote to increase the United States debt ceiling. On one side, 66% of Republicans and 51% of independent voters do not think the debt ceiling should be raised; while on the other side only 32% of Democrats think it should be raised.

The poll of 1,032 voters was conducted on May 4, 2001 and was weighted by age, race, gender and political party affiliation. The poll has a maximum sampling error of +/- 2.9%.
